Life seems to be rare in our solar system - except on our polanet. But that says so little about the liklihood of life in the universe, it doesn't even bear mention. Like Paul said, you have extremely little data from outside our solar system, so you really can't conclude much of anything based on that lack of data. If and when we get such data, we may be able to make some conclusions.
But based on other criteria - based on the experiments carried out by Kauffman and others, there is good reason to expect that whenever a certain threshold of molecular diversity is passed - a threshold that is not unimaginable on many other planets throughout the universe - then life becomes very likely. Yes, we're certainly a special planet and a special species, but to imagine we're "chosen by God" or some other such imagining is taking this "specialness" a bit far, to say the least.
