25 years ago the hot idea was giant flywheels. The technical problem of centripetal force is easy to overcome with long heavy cylinders. Use DC motor/generator sets and you don't have a frequency problem as the wheel accelerates and decelerates. Giant flywheels can be built with off the shelf components. Ever seen one? Neither have I. Sometimes free energy is just too expensive to compete with coal/oil/nuclear.
