You are correct that a nuclear warhead would need nothing to push on. The heat would vaporize, at very high pressure, surrounding rock and the internal pressure would explode it.
But nuclear solutions to asteroids are about as dumb as dirt. The most likely result would be that the earth, instead of being hit by one asteroid would be hit by many. And it has been demonstrated repeatedly that two 1/2 mile diameter asteroids are far more dangerous than one 1 mile diameter asteroid. We have no evidence that we could decrease the danger using this method. Quite a lot to the contrary.
