The first thing the Pledge of Allegiance taught me was how to lie. I used to whisper the words "under god" very softly and quickly while looking over my shoulder and praying my Marxist father never heard me say them. It made me feel dirty and deceitful and very ashamed. My self-esteem still tends to ride on a submarine.

It's NOT a harmless phrase, IMHO.
