Can't see the wood

Saw an article about trees communicating. When you chop into a tree it causes a surge of energy through it. The same surge can be detected in trees nearby some moments later which haven't be touched. I've heard about how adjacent trees can make their leaves move unpalatable when animals are grazing on nearby trees. Does anyone know whether this surge of energy might protect the tree or put more simply make it harder to chop down. Forgive any apparent insenitivity to trees in my efforts to be brief.
