I agree with you 100% that we well either find a way to expand or die trying - there doesn't seem to be any logical way around that.

What is central to this issue is whether expending energy and resources landing [man] on mars will aid us in achieving that seemingly impossible goal. I'm not sure it will. Reason being, as previously stated, our current space program technology is nothing short of a technological dead end. The only thing that is going to get us "out there" is technological advance so fundamentally profound as to very likely lay waste to all our past advances – just as the automobile did to horsemanship and buggy whips. That advance is not going to come out of the current space program's goal to put man on mars, the moon, or any other extraterrestrial body.
