If you do the physics, the sun loses NO mass at all! Thermonuclear fusion does not convert mass to energy. Really. The energy output comes from reshuffling fields - nuclear binding energies, products vs starting materials.

The number of baryons and leptons going in is the same as the respective numbers coming out. Beta decay in some reaction channels finally gives you a minor fraction of real mass conversion.
