I well remember the 'Cod Wars' when the goverment had to send out gunboats with the fishing fleet to ensure that Spain and I*celands fishermen, did not come closer than (50 miles?) to our shores.
Ultimately we were told by the EU Fishing Union to cut our fishing fleet. And still later, to cut the tonnage of our landed fish.
Since we British eat 1/3rd of the worlds Cod catch, it caused great hardship to the fishing ports and fishermen. Nesessitating the goverment to pay the fishermen for laying up their boats and not working.
I thought a European program had been instituted to increase the size of the netting, so as to allow the younger fish to escape and therefore breed.
Obviously this is another example where money talks and good ideas are forgotten about?
