You will no longer see sparrow out in the park on holiday because sparrow now has a computer and surfs the net. You will find it easier to observe him here.
But in answer to your question, perhaps. Maybe they were driven out by competition for scarce resources. But it is also possible that some environmental change made the area inhospitable for them and the new birds are filling the gap. In the case of these birds it doesn't strike me that they would compete for the same food. But I am no expert on this. It just strikes me that sparrows eat the french fries and the jays and gulls eat the packaging, the bag, and the receipt.
