No. Amebas would meet that criterion.

To me, and this is not the medical definition, I would say the ability to perceive oneself objectively within their environment. The operative phrase being 'objectively'.

Beyond that is the ability to perceive oneself within their environment detached from their present emotional state. So I would consider it to be a statement of greater consciousness to say "I'm in a bad mood" than to say "Everything is rotten."
