Re: the shoddy surface temperature network (George)

You are so right George. Global measurements have been appalling in the past, and even downright wrong.
Having followed the 'Global posts' closely, I have found a very interesting paper (1998) which states the following.
"Previous satellite data suggested that the Earths lower atmosphere was cooling" This has been proved wrong....wait for it.... "No one was aware that the Microwave sounding Satellites, operated by the US National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were slipping, that is actually falling by 1.2 kilometers every year !!!
No account had been taken of this when the slippage was greatest in 1979-83 and again in 1989-92 coinciding with the periods when the sun was very active, making our lower atmosphere more dense.
When these slippages were taken into account
Messrs Frank Wentz and Schabel (Remote Sensing systems in Santa Rosa Cal)found that the mysterious cooling trend was actually a warming trend of 0.07 C per decade.
They became suspicious of the Sat: data, because it showed that the lower Troposphere was cooling much more than the middle Troposphere. "It did'nt agree with anything" Both balloon obsevations and greenhouse warming models had suggested there should have been more cooling at higher altitudes.

James Hansen and colleagues at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in New York in a related paper published in 'Science'(vol 281, p 9300) say they believe this new data will stand the test of time. "The issue should no longer be whether global warming is occurring but what is the rate of global warming?"

**Well this should change the Sceptics regarding Global warming.
