God said it would. He said life would become hard. The earth would then produce undesirable plants and so forth. There aren't too many(if any) answers to "Why?" in the Bible.

I didn't say death was only consequence, I offered that more things other than death happened earlier in the thread. We were discussing death. Why should the "sustainer that kept life going [before the fall]" still be present? I agree with you, it doesn't seem to be present anymore. Sin entered the world and the "harmony" that God was sustaining was interrupted/stopped as punishment. The present is not always a key to the past. I havent seen any 9 foot giants(clans of them) lately. But they did exist according to the Bible as well as what I watched on the discovery or learning channel the other night.
