Good point - what we call the subconscious mind is able to do many things, such as drive a car, without us watching it at work. If we watch it while it does something, that is what we call the conscious mind watching. I believe, and this is contrary to modern thought, that animals do things in the subconscious way, and that we have gone further and learned to watch from a detached viewpoint. This gave us, among other things, humour, which needs a detached viewpoint. The modern view tends to make conscious behaviour fundamental in some way, rather than an add-on to an existing fundamental state.
