Yes, it is true that tobacco smoke was long recognized as being bad for you, but that is "bad" as in "It will stunt your growth" (Kids looked around and said, 'Yeah, right!'), "It will make you cough", "It will stain your teeth", etc. etc. Back then, most people did not fully appreciate tobacco smoke as being something that would kill you. Please bear in mind that, up until about 70 years ago, many people still genuinely believed that cancer was sent to an individual as a "punishment from God".
