I will acknowledge, up front, that my definitions are not based on those of clinic psychiatry.

But I don't think most humans are actually conscious. Paying attention is quite another matter.

A gazelle being stalked by a lion is hopefully paying attention. I doubt there is anything going on its head equivalent to what goes on in mine or yours.

But when I say I don't think most humans are conscious I think of the number of times I have successfully driven my car to work with perfection and can't remember much about the trip.
