The figure was arrived at like this in the book: You know the size of the orbit, you know the moon takes a month to go around the earth and if you figure out how far it goes in one second you can figure out how far the circle of the moon's orbit has fallen below the straight line. I'm an amature at this and just trusting the book, which may be a composite of the moon's orbit. But I think a have a real understanding of the subject conceptually. Many quesitons I have asked myself I have later seen in books on the subject, I think this makes one feels they know their subject.
