While Dan is certainly capable of "quash[ing]" a subject, his reply was nothing more than an attempt to clarify the original question, which, as posed, made answering the question impossible or at least overly difficult.

The way you phrased the question makes it clear that you are trying to gain a clear understanding of a concept without a willingness to discard your current paradigms. These paradigms are fine for the broad and popular understanding, but lack the precision necessary for detailed discussion. One of these paradigms is that gravity makes things “fall” but the term “fall” is a strictly human conceptual description of descending freely by the force of gravity. So to rephrase your original question with that definition in mind, it would read:

if the earth is descending freely by the force of gravity in a gravity field, where is it descending freely by the force of gravity to, or for that matter, what is it descending freely by the force of gravity towards, (was told attraction of mass was cause of gravity).

Which is non-sensical, circular, and utterly confusing. To use a bushism, it's sillimetric.
