Re: The Future of Cars, Assured-Running on Hydrogen (Mike Kremer)

I think I have found the answer. The use of Wind Power turbines (the fastest growing UK industry in the field of power generation) should be more than sufficient.

It would certainly not hurt matters...unless you happen to be a bird, then it might hurt alot :-)

birds + windmill = splat.

One Megawatt of wind generating capacity will easily satisfy the needs of 1000 people (or approx 350 households) in our modern society.

One Megawatt generating capacity continiously? That works out to one kw per person. Off hand, doesn't seem unreasonable. But then again, i'm using over half a kw at this very moment just writing to you with my overgrown typewriter. hmmm, maybe i better put it back ON HAND :-)

Let's get out the ol' electric bill and figure it out.

:bobba rumages through bill drawer...looks for average month.

Ah! here it is. Month of May is a nice one. Not too hot, not too cold. ok, 30 day usage = 1,182 Kwh total. divide by 30 days = 39.4 kwh per day. 5 people in family = 7.88 kwh per person per day. Dang! I'm going to have to cut back considerably!

Electrolysing water to produce Hydrogen in quantity. By compressing the gas, together with automatic cylinder storage,....the motorist could pay, and pick up a cylinder pack, as required to fuel his car.

Just a quick comment here.

My (very possibly incorrect) understanding of the matter is as follows (i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm the least bit wrong)

To get hydrogen to an energy density (btu's per cubic foot) in the same order of magnitude as gasoline, it needs to be compressed at the order of 5000 psi. Apart from the safety issue of the 5 kpsi tank in the trunk, it might be noted that compressing hydrogen that far employs more energy than the sum of the energy it contains and the energy it took to make it.
