I had said that the book was the history of the faith of the Jews. In no way does that limit what the reader draws from it in revelation to his/her own spirit.
The urban legend that the texts have been corrupted is an old one, and DAM and I have gone around on this several times before. (Especially the role of translations.) It is a wonderful defense to justify not confronting eternally important personal decisions.
