I don’t see the problem. Clearly the bellboy works for Arthur Anderson. But seriously…

The puzzle misleads the reader into two false assumptions – that each man paid $9.00 and that the room cost 30 dollars. Neither is true. Each man actually paid 10 dollars minus 1 dollar they got back minus the 66 cents the bellboy stole. That comes to $8.33 each. $8.33 * 3 = $25 which is the cost of the room – not $30.

So

(30-5) = (10-1-.66)*3

No problem.
