Continuing a conversation with Dan...

Dan sez [regarding the nuclear industry]

But please don't forget that their entire industry has been subsidized from its inception. There was never a point where it was otherwise.

But does it require subsidy now? Would that required subsidy, if any, be more or less than the actual (rather than direct) subsidies to the oil industry? If the safety margin for nuclear were lowered to that of coal, would it still require a subsidy? I downloaded the federal budget and found a total of about 2.7 billion for ALL [direct] energy expenditures in 2000, not just nuclear. Assuming Nuclear got all of that, would that be out of line with other hidden subsidies afforded to oil and coal?
