Yes, but I want to say the apple doesn't need to increase in velocity either. The apple does not need to go faster to be accelleration. So the explantion that it appears that way to us is that it turns towards us in an curve, as the site you recommended suggested object do. I'm sure the moon would also appear to accellerate if the earth wasn't rotating. The more it would turn down in the sky the faster it would appear to go as its direction became more vertical with our position. What would have been its sideways movement would now also become its downward movement making it appear to accellerate toward the horizon.
