Let's change the whole setup. Big hole under the vaulting area. The vaulter approaches and makes the attempt in a normal manner. At the apex of the vault the floor where the pole pit was moves back creating an even bigger hole. The hole is covered by a net. At the base of the hole there is an entrance from a wind tunnel with a fast acting damper. A sudden 120mph wind blows upward causing the vaulter to suddenly seem to float in mid air. The air flow is then slowly reduced lowering the vaulter to the net.

But actually, Danny had the right idea before doing as he always prefers to do - turning the subject from science to politics. Why bother? Don't we have more important things to worry about? Not another handgun law but maybe DNA research?
