It was a good story until spoilt by the facts. The Romans would remeasure and look again, its concievably they would have noticed. Especially if it was repeated, always giving the same results. Anyway it is not in any way the point I was making. People did believe in a flat earth and had trouble with the concept of a ball floating in space and being able to walk upside down as they imagined. I'm suggesting we might need a similar leap of understanding to get a better idea on what gravity is.
