Just another thought on the atoms. When you heat an object it expands because the electrons jump to higher orbits or it contracts when cooled because of the opposite effect. My four and eight atoms mentioned are supposed to represent the same size material, like wood and iron, one with less atoms the other with more and still try to have them expanding evenly. But as I implied earlier this might fall at the first hurdle.
