The need for an observer is one of many possible interpretations of QM: And not one that finds overwhelming favor these days: Though a few people do still tend in that direction.

An observer ... as viewed by most current physicists ... is any physical interaction. Thus a tree falling in the forest need not be observed by a bear ... it can be observed by the air molecules that move as it falls, the leaves it crushes, the vibration in the dirt, etc.
