There was never a problem understanding what happened when people traveled around the world. It had been known, by educated people, since at least the time of ancient Greece that the world was round. The Greeks even had a pretty good idea how big it was. In fact, that was why everybody thought Columbus was crazy when he wanted to get to China by sailing West. The majority opinion was that it was much too far for a ship to sail that distance. Columbus used a minority opinion as to the size of the Earth to talk up his journey. Fortunately the new world was in the way, so he survived.
