How I would love to be able to answer this question. How important is it to have people who really think and care about things. There is no scientific answer only an emotional one. There are too many things that can happen to end the world. You want to react to this one, me to an astroid maybe, Bush to Bin Laden, someone else to the rain forest, someone else to the break down of law and order, the list is unfortunately endless. But I'm glad you're there trying to put things into historical perspective, trying to make a case, even if I disagree because there are other things too. I've felt the same on other issues, but hope our long tenure so far on this planet won't end just because I was looking away. You'd rather deal with the ice breakaway I suppose but scientific explanations won't answer this question I think.
