Re: Not Dry Ice, but Real Ice on Mars Today (Mike Kremer)

Now just where did all that CO2 come from?

Sort of like asking where all the gold on the earth's surface came from. Complicated chemical process that is just a result of the conditions. The conditions on Mars lead to a large concentration of CO2 on the surface.

Sorry there is too much to assimilate all at once. My intent wasn't to provide an extensive education on the geology of Mars but rather to let everyone decide for themselves how "speculative" the CO2 theory is. If you research the topic you find lots of reports where people state that the gullies on Mars "obviously look water made" and another group that has extensive technical detail on how CO2 could make these gullies and how difficult it would be for water to make them. Both theories are speculation at the moment but the water theory is based on "just look at them" while the CO2 theory is based on the physical conditions of Mars. Yes, there is a lot of H2O but it is locked up in ice and it is hard to come up with a way water could flow on Mars. CO2 on the other hand could produce the observed gullies. The water crowd depends mostly on how the gullies look and the CO2 crowd depends on the physics. So which would you call "speculation"?
