Well Im ever the optimist regarding life in the Universe, so here is some backup for you Dan, and
a possible answer Bill Wallace's query below.
NASA has stated that since the SPole Cap of Mars is now up to two miles high....it just couldnt support that weight were it only Carbon Dioxide.
Therefore, apart from the top surface..it must be Ice. They estimate the quantity of ice to be an equivalent volume to that on Greenland.
I cant wait for the Mars Polar lander.
