Your land mass was stated to be 45 degrees. Any landmass located beneath 75 degrees requires only three if, as you stated, the polar regions of the planet are not considered a point in the universe. This was first demonstrated by A. Asimov around 1945 or so (before satellites even existed)

And again, if your geosynchronous requirement was just for ease, only two are necessary.

And BTW, I frankly don't get the 4 satellite answer if the geosynchronous requirement stays. It simply will not work (meaning i can't picture it)
