I think that what that was about, and I'm not going to go looking for the reference now, was that the first measurement they made during the eclipse looks now as if there was a larger error in the measurement than the variation in the apparent position of the star they checked. I believe some more recent measurements have shown the correct deviation.
The orbit of Mercury was a completely different matter and had bothering people for a long time, until Eistein. I believe the calculations have been repeated several times and they still work when you figure in General Relativity.
