Perhaps there was an allergy to the one of the substances contained within the tablet coating?

Methylphenidate: (brand names - Concerta, Metadate ER, Methylin, Ritalin, Ritalin-SR.)

-is a mild stimulant to the central nervous system. The exact way that methylphenidate works is unknown.

-is used to treat ADD, ADHD and narcolepsy.

-may also be used for pirposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

-do not take methylphenidate if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days.

-do not take if you have an allergy to methylphenidate; have severe tension, agitiation, or anxiety; have glaucoma; have motor tics, or have been diagnosed as having Tourette's syndome; have a psychotic condition such as schizophrenia; have a history of drug abuse or alcoholism; have a marrowing or blockage of your gastrointestinal tract.

-is listed as FDA pregnancy category C (it is not known whether it will harm an unborn baby).

-Each dose should be taken with 8 oz. of water, 30 to 45 minutes before a meal.

-The sustained or extended release formulatons should not be crushed, chewed or broken.

-Methylphenidate may cause drug-dependence.

-Dosage adjustments may be required if the following drugs are also being taken: warfarin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, nortriptyline, amytriptyline, doxepin, desipramine, clomipramine, imipramine, prozac, luvox, paxil, zoloft, catapres, ismelin.
