I suppose ancients noticed that when the Sun rose in exactly the same place again....365 days had passed.
That there were 13 full Moons during the same time
as the Chinese and Jews noted.
The shortest shadow cast, equaled to miday, the
time was further subdivided using water or candle
clocks in olden times.
