At the time the discussion was "it couldn't have happened because where did all the water go?" My contention at that time wasn't that we would necessarily find water down there but that seismic waves gave us densities that didn’t match the earth’s mass and the resolution of the discrepancy was that there must be a lot of hydrogen down there. We always knew the oxygen was there. This only seems to narrow the chemical structure that the oxygen and hydrogen are combined to form water. But it does answer the objection of “where’d the water go?”
