Yes, telescope making is hard to do. The process is relatively simple, but it requires an enormous amount of work. I recall when my brother made ground an 8 inch telescope mirror when I was young. He spent hour after hour walking around a stand with the tool mounted on it and pushing the mirror blank back and forth across it. Then when he had it ground to a spherical surface with the correct curvature he had to resurface the tool with a layer of pitch and grind the mirror very precisely until he had just the right parabolic curvature to it.

The work for a 14.5 inch mirror would be much greater.
