On a more serious note, I remember when the USA banned the sweetener Saccharine over 20 years ago because it was shown to cause liver cancer when fed (in quantity) to rats.
I'm not sure it was ever banned. The FDA did propose such but Congress did not allow the ban. This was probably not due to the scientific expertise of Congress but rather interested lobby groups "convincing" them it was not a danger. See - soft money has it's uses!
Anyway, they did require that products containing saccharine have warning labels.
