I've even heard of linear-b before, and I'm just a biologist. If more stuff survived from ancient times, we'd probably see more examples of ancient scripts. You have to have a certain population density to need or develop an alphabet, I'd think; some old goatherd in the desert isn't going to need to write anything down, unless he's moonlighting as a novelist or something. Let's face it, the old sword with the runic inscription "Gyf me sohn me sweord" is more likely to survive than the goatherd's paper or parchment receipt for selling his goats.
