i agree with his distaste for the *prescriptivists* even though i am, paradoxically and curiously, highly prescriptive in some arenas (in other words, i laugh at myself...a lot :-)
i disagree with his thinly veiled evolutionary implication -- ie first we had speech and then about 10,000ya we had writing
we are subtly pummelled with this ubiquitous nonsense in every medium of communication and in almost every academic publication
