Any high school chemistry student, with nothing more than the total global usage of hydrocarbons and coal, can come reasonably close to calculating the amount of carbon dioxide created and added to the atmosphere.

Really? Ok, for every pound of coal burned, how much carbon goes into the atmosphere as CO2 and how much goes out with the ash as unburned carbon? Same question for gasoline. Now the toughy - same question for lubricating oils.

The question ... is how much is removed.

Certainly less than is being added as evidenced by the slow rise. But a good question. A better question is what are the dynamics of the removal processes. The removal process obviously changes over time but how fast?
