By "trained as a scientist" I assume you mean that you completed a four-year undergraduate program in a field of science (Which one? It makes a difference.)
The standard "next step" for most branches of the sciences would be to apply for graduate school. There are some jobs that would hire you with a bachelors', but they will be strictly technician level and would not pay much and rarely have any real potential for advancement. Most jobs require some kind of graduate degree. Graduate schools in the sciences do pay you some kind of a stipend, but it is subsistence wages. Combined with student housing, etc, it is enough to get by. That is called "paying your dues".
That is "how it is done".
