A study reported in Science Daily suggests that the earliest Homo ancestors moved out of Africa before we attained our current height. The authors of the paper developed new techniques for calculating the size of hominids from smaller bone samples. Their calculations show that our modern body proportions developed in Africa after 1.77 million years ago. The predecessors of Homo erectus in Asia were apparently significantly smaller bodied than we are. The authors didn't take a stand on whether our earliest ancestors were all one species with a large diversity of body types or were different species.
