Phy.Org reports that a new fossil of an early Homo (The human lineage) has been found in the Afar region of Ethiopia. Earliest known fossil of the genus Homo dates to 2.8 to 2.75 million years ago The fossil is a jawbone that was found eroding out of a layer that was between 2 layers of volcanic ash which were used to date the fossil.

They didn't say what species the fossil might belong to, but the earliest species that has been named was Homo habilis, so my first thought is that it might be a member of that species. I could be wrong about that, since there was apparently quite a bit of speciation going on at that time.
