The NIST (National Institute of Science and Technology) has developed a watt balance that just about anybody can build. A watt balance is a device to determine Planck's Constant to a high degree of accuracy. The device is a balance that uses a known weight on one side and a current carrying coil on the other. A number of high precision watt balances have been built. Now the NIST has developed one that can be built using Legos for the structure. The total cost is about $634 US. The story is on Phys.Org. NIST physicists build a watt balance using LEGO blocks to measure Planck's constant.

Two thoughts entered my head

1.) How much did Lego pay for the endorsement, call me a cynic.
2.) Will it ever be cheap enough for our resident crazy to buy so he can see how trivially wrong he is after all his great invention is supposed to generate anti-gravity lift smile

Bill,
Your link led me to a fashion designer page. Is that the right link? Just checking.

No that was not the right link. I'm not sure how that got in there. Try Phys.Org

Ok, this time I checked it and it seems to be working. I really need to remember to check the links before I post.

Thanks for the link, Bill. It seems LEGOs are showing up everywhere. I'm glad to see some scientific usefulness for the little foot-killers.
