This ZOOMable, MOVEable, and true Colour Digital Mosaic of the Milky Way.....was made up from over 3000 CCD frames.
The fields were photometrically calibrated using standard catalog stars and sky background data from the Pioneer 10 and 11 space probes!!
Amazing

Just look at those stars. When you see them, it comes home to you what '100 billion' means. Then you realize that, on the cosmic scale, each star represents a galaxy in the observable universe. And the mathematics of the whole kit and caboodle precisely right for the appearance of carbon based life. Can anything be more beautiful?

His program might well be considered crude in ten years time, Which only shows how I believe it will be improved with data coming in from the great telescopes today.

We should praise Axel Mellinger for having the foresight and time to put this program together

(I notice that some of the Messier Nos: can be brought up in < apod.nasa.gov > search box)
