Part of the funding for the Department of Defense this year will go to creating a set of 3 National Parks to keep alive the history of the Manhattan Project which developed the first atomic bombs. They will be at Oak Ridge TN, Los Alamos NM, and Hanford Washington. They will preserve the remains of the facilities used in the development so that they won't be lost to history.

The story is available at the Physics Buzz website. The story is also available as a podcast which you can hear from the link.

Cool! Are they going to clean up the Hanford site, or just leave it in its pristine contaminated glory to contaminate all the visitors equally? Will people get to take home a sample of radioactive waste as a souvenir? Might be one way to get rid of all the radioactive waste and make a profit off of people's ignorance.
