John Hawks has a link to a video presentation on the findings at Dmanisi, in Georgia (Eastern Europe, not Eastern USA) on his blog. Basically they have found evidence for early humans around 1.8 million years ago (MYA). They were not Homo Erectus. Homo Erectus for a long time was considered to be the first human species to leave Africa. These finds kind of shot that idea down.
