Orac's contribution to a discussion of the Higgs got me to put up a couple of interesting discussions about what the discovery that the Higgs means for other theories.

Ethan Siegal discusses what is beyond the Standard model So just what is out there beyond the Standard Model?. It turns out that there is plenty to be found yet, we can keep finding new things for a long time yet.

Matt Strassler talks about why other theories have not been knocked out by the latest information about the Higgs Remember That “Blow” to Supersymmetry (And Other Theories)? Some of the other theories may still have some life. The constraints presented by Higgs just mean that some variations of the theories are ruled out, not necessarily all of the variations.

BG:
What is the standard model?

Assuming you are somewhat of an expert in physics, who are some of the physicists to whom you defer?

The Standard Model is the QM model which accurately predicts all the particle physics of which we are aware. Google Standard Model to learn more.

Based on your suggestion, I read the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Model

Blaming only myself, it made little or no sense to me. What on earth are
Quote:
weak, and strong nuclear interactions, which mediate the dynamics of the known subatomic particles? And what impact do they have on our daily lives?
refered to in the quote,
Quote:
The Standard Model of particle physics is a theory concerning the electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear interactions, which mediate the dynamics of the known subatomic particles....... More recently, (2011–2012) the apparent detection of the Higgs boson completes the set of predicted particles. Because of its success in explaining a wide variety of experimental results, the Standard Model is sometimes regarded as a "theory of almost everything".
Don't feel bad, I get the same feeling when I try to read certain parts of the Bible, especially the book of Revelation. Chapter 4 onwards, for example uses words that are mostly symbolic and poetic--the kind I avoid taking literally.
Quote:
Revelation 4, Contemporary English Version (CEV)
Worship in Heaven

4 After this, I looked and saw a door that opened into heaven. Then the voice that had spoken to me at first and that sounded like a trumpet said, “Come up here! I will show you what must happen next.”
2 Right then the Spirit took control of me, and there in heaven I saw a throne and someone sitting on it.
3 The one who was sitting there sparkled like precious stones of jasper[a] and carnelian.[b] A rainbow that looked like an emerald[c] surrounded the throne.
4 Twenty-four other thrones were in a circle around that throne. And on each of these thrones there was an elder dressed in white clothes and wearing a gold crown.
5 Flashes of lightning and roars of thunder came out from the throne in the center of the circle. Seven torches, which are the seven spirits of God, were burning in front of the throne.
6 Also in front of the throne was something that looked like a glass sea, clear as crystal.
Scholars, generally speaking, agree that it is about the untimate triumph of God, through Jesus the Christ, over Satan and his angels of evil. All faithful and good people will live forever in a new heaven and on a new earth. Somewhat the same as a
