What if Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and the whole mythic Middle Earth was not set in the far ancient past, but in the remote future?

That's the theme of a short story I've just completed (ask me and I'll send it to you) inspired by watching the Rings movie trilogy and Arthur C. Clarke's law "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". Now imagine if all that magic in Middle Earth, was Very Advanced Technology.... and what came next?
