THE STUPIDITY OF CUPIDITY--the inordinate, or eager desire, especially for things and power--a passion for gain and power over others, regardless of the needs of others; in short, avarice or greed.

The word comes from the Latin, cupere, desire. Cupid--from the Latin noun, Cupido, was the Roman god of love--was the son of Mercury and Venus, and is identified with the Greek god Eros, from which we get our word erotic.

Cupid is usually represented as a winged baby boy with bows and arrows.

Needless to say, desire held within moral, ethical, loving and natural bounds, and guided by philia (friendship) and agape (respect and good will for all, including enemies) is good. Greed is not good!

Any examples you have of cupidity will be helpful.

So Rev, how about a world wide financial crisis caused by the knowing loan of money that did not exist to people who would never earn enough to pay off their loan to buy 'stuff' that they did not need thus ending up indebted to the monopolists who do not own the resources that they are selling because they bought them with loans of non-existent money so they could sell goods to people who had to borrow beyond their means............. and so on in a horrible uncontrolled spiral.........!

Does that qualify?

Nice one, Ellis!

Check the financial pages of the paper, any day, and you will find examples. How about the huge bonuses paid to CEO's who lead their companies into debt?
